Ugly Bread Box

Once upon a time.....

there was an ugly bread box.

So I decided to get it and fix it up.

I couldn't find anything for the top of my refrigerator that I was happy with.

So that's where the bread box came in.

A little CeCe Caldwell Hershey Brown chalk paint.

Trimmed out in Vintage White.

I used my cricut to make a stencil.

And I got some scrapbook paper and covered the ugly wheat looking thing in the center.  I glued it on and brushed a thin coat of Mod Podge over the top.

I also used some dark and clear wax.

And now I have something new for the top of the fridge.

And I might as well have something I like on top of it, considering I stand in front the fridge several times a day wishing the grocery store fairy would go shopping for me.

But she's a moody thing and rarely wants to venture out.

I still need to figure out exactly what I want to put with the box.

So I ask...

what's on your refrigerator?  Do tell.

Wedding Shower

In a recent post I mentioned that my daughter and I hosted a wedding shower for a friend.  I thought I would show you a couple of pictures of the decorations.  We didn't do anything fancy and our church isn't real fancy, but it all still made for a nice shower.

We had a candy bar.  I loved using the Cricut to make the hearts with the holes already in them.

We painted a flower pot to put the utensils in.

We had cupcakes instead of a cake.  It's so much easier that way!
The lighting wasn't good and it was really hard to get a nice picture.

  Simple table decorations.
This was early.  There were a LOT more presents than this!

A towel cake my daughter made.  It's a twofer - a nice gift AND a decoration.  :)

We also made a burlap banner.  More Cricut fun! :)  And we used one of the large paper mache letters from Joanns.  We mod podged different sized pictures of the couple all over it.  This was a surprise - well most everything was - but we printed pictures from both of their facebook accounts in order to get plenty of shots.

Like I said, nothing fancy, but still a nice afternoon and a couple of decorations that she can maybe use somewhere along the way.

Stay safe until next time!

You Are My Sunshine

I used to walk around my classroom looking at students homework and I would hum the song - "You are my Sunshine."

Evidently I had been doing this for a long time and didn't realize it until one of the students commented on it.

A few years ago (probably ten years later), I received a message from a former student who said she had heard that song and immediately thought of me.

So when I needed  a piece of artwork to fill up a sorta big wall in my dining room, that is what I chose.

It's a 2'x3' so it's not a bad size.

The above picture shows a little how I rubbed sandpaper across it, because I wanted to distress it.  I chickened out doing more.  I think I would really like it kinda washed out though.

It really does make me happy every time I walk in my dining room and see it because I was tired of looking at that bare wall.

So what do you think?  Distress it?  Or leave it alone?

Stay safe until next time -

Spray Painted Magazine Rack

I know lots of you have talked about how you love spray paint, but I have never been that good at it.  About the only thing I spray paint regularly are the two rocking chairs I keep on the front porch.

I bought an old, beat up magazine holder a few weeks ago for about two dollars.  I thought it would be good to practice on since I have a tendency to practice on real things that don't always look as great as I'd hoped in the end.  My plan was to just brush paint it, since that's what I usually do.  However, I wanted it green and I didn't have a can of green paint and naturally when I decided I wanted it done, I wanted it done - Right. Now.

Also, I realized brush painting in between the slots wouldn't be near as easy as spray paint.  And for a non-spray painter like me, I sure do have lots of cans of spray paint!

Anyway, here is the before.  I have a cutesy little helper in the background.  :)
 And here is an after.
I distressed it and decided it needed something since it's kinda large.  I used the side that had the flower design in the before picture since the edges were in a little better shape.  I used the cricut to made a stencil and then used my watery ugly beige paint to write out 'magazines.'  I then distressed over that hoping to blend it to look old.  I think it would have been better if I had used the other side to put the word since there was a raised area from the flower, but I still like it.  The guys like it too.  Of course, they're guys.  :)  We'll see if my daughter likes it the next time she comes home.  :)

Either it was sunny... or it was way too dark.  :)
Not bad for a beginner (in this area).  Of course, I think alot of things look good until I take a pic of them!  :)

Stay safe until next time!

Baseball Subway Art

Baseball makes me think of spring just as much as any flowers or singing birds!  We are baseball fanatics around our house!!  Which all led me to my next project....

Just right before Valentine's day, I made my son a baseball subway art for his college apartment.  I thought he might like it, but not really sure how much.  He was home one weekend while I was working on it and  I noticed he kept looking at it when he would walk through.  It wasn't long until he said, "Hey, do ya think you could make one of those for my girlfriend for Valentine's day?"  :)

Well, of course.  I would love to do what I can to save you money on her Valentine's present.  :)

So here we go.  I didn't take too many pictures, so I'm posting the only decent ones I have.  It was my first project with my new cricut and I was IN LOVE!

I made his red to match his room, and it's driving me C R A Z Y that the streeeerike looks crooked, but he left with it before I had a chance to do anything about it.  One of these days - in May actually - he will have to move home for the summer and I'm going to see if it's really crooked or if it's the angle of the picture.  And if it really is crooked - I'm fixing it!!!  Is it just me or does everyone else learn a major lesson the first time you do a new project?!

My son says his girlfriend has all colors in her room so I just went with gold since that's part of the school colors.  I guess you can figure out she's a softball player.  :)

I didn't notice until now how I just happened to hang his - with red on it - on the red wall, and hers - with gold on it - on the yellow wall!

Hopefully soon I'll learn how to take decent pictures.  :)

I have a few other projects I worked on this winter that I'll blog about soon.

Stay safe until next time!
