What's on Your Counter?

I had this tray that I bought at one of the events uptown on the square.  It was just a few dollars and it was that greenish looking wood.  No idea what it really was, but it was not my style!

So I made up some homemade white chalk paint and painted, then lightly distressed it.  And eventually used a little clear and dark wax.

I've also had this lamp setting on my counter for a while now, but I just wasn't feeling it anymore.

I glazed the base just for a little something different.

Renaissance Brown

I then cut some red burlap that I had and hot glued it to the edges of the shade.

I left the fringed edge the way it came with the brown thread running through it.  I then took some jute and hot glued it around the bottom edge of the shade.

I had this little glass jar and put a little yellow paint inside it, then added one of the leftover wedding shower flowers (dare ya say that real fast!).

I then put it all together with a few other things I had.

I bought this plate a year ago or so at TJ Maxx.  I love the design, but all I could find - other than this plate - was a spoon rest.

On a trip to Branson this spring, I made a stop in Mulberry Mill (love that place!) and picked up this cute little nest and eggs for just a few dollars.

I also bought this container at TJ Maxx a few weeks ago to use for my utensils.

Instead of having my lamp on the counter, my utensil holder on the counter, and some other little doo-dad, I tried to streamline the look by putting things in the tray.

I fight clutter enough on my countertops, I don't need anything else adding to it.

So what about you?

Do you have anything on your counters? Do you fight clutter like I do?  And please say yes!!

I can't wait to see you next time!

  1. I am constantly fighting clutter! I tend to "collect" way too much stuff! I am constantly trying to edit what I have! You did a great job with this little "tray display!"

  3. Thanks for stopping by my blog Misti! I love the tray idea - it really brings it all together and oh my, lovin' what you did with the red burlap on the shade. I was lucky enough to go to Mulberry Mill in Branson this past March - woo hoo! I wish I lived closer than ten hours away - I could do some major retail damage there. Jane

  4. Darling vignette, Misti! Thanks for showing us how you pulled it together and your sources. I have never even heard of Mulberry Mill...I will have to keep my eyes open for one if I travel this summer. I am constantly asking myself "do I really need this out on the kitchen counter?' and trying to declutter (but the clutter just seems to keep coming back!). Thanks to your post, I am going to go take a fresh look and see what I can edit or display in a better way like you have.

  6. Oh, mercy, do I fight clutter on my countertops! Actually, I lose the battle most days. I need to take inspiration from your darling tray. You did a great job pulling all these things together!

  7. That is a lovely little vignette. I have enjoyed painting a few pieces of furniture with homemade chalk paint too. We have large glass jars full of flours, sugars etc, pitchers full of cooking utensils, my huge Kitchenaid Pro mixer, cutting boards and a little homemade crate tray used as a beverage center. So yeah, our counters have stuff on them lol.

  8. This is such a cute idea!! As a college student, my living space is tiny. It's not necessarily that I have a lot its just where to make everything fit and still look decent! I love this idea!

  9. I love your vignette, & I especially like things arranged on trays or shallow baskets. I'm lucky to have quite a bit of counter space, but I still fight the clutter of things that I don't feel belong there -- like things The Man likes to add...lol! I go through stages where I want a very sparse look, but then that doesn't feel cozy enough & I start adding things back in. Oh well, watcha gonna do!

  10. I actually have very few things on our counter and I'm pretty good at having no clutter. However this is a wonderful idea for containing cute/decorative things as well as functional things. Nice :-)
